Audra Mae is a Los Angeles based singer and songwriter from Oklahoma. A descendant of Judy Garland's family, Audra has made quite the name for herself writing hit songs including Miranda Lambert's "Little Red Wagon", Kelly Clarkson's "Heartbeat Song", and the only original song on Susan Boyle's debut album, "Who I was Born To be." She lent her brilliant vocals to Avicii's hit song "Addicted To You," and covered Bob Dylan's "Forever Young," which was featured on Sons of Anarchy.
What is the first thing you think of when you hear the name Janis Joplin?
-Her voice. It's like a sweet, broken war cry. And her laugh!
What about Janis’ style resonates with you most?
-The textures of fabric and layers and colors. The clothes never wore her, even a giant fur hat couldn't overpower her spirit.
What is the Janis song that moves you the most?
-She did a cover of a song by The Chantelles called "Maybe". I heard it for the first time ten years ago and even now, when I hear it, it makes me cry.
If you could take Janis to one concert who would take her to see?
If you could play her one of your songs/ dress her in something you’ve created/ share with her your favorite photo, which one would it be and why?
-I'd play her "Fall In Line", from my upcoming album. I think she'd love it. It's about empowering little girls to stop themselves from behaving as if they are beholden to a society that idolizes empty forms of femininity. "Ask yourself why it matters. Who it flatters. You're more than flesh and bone."
-I'd love to see her in my cowboy boots! She'd rock 'em!
-My favorite photo... My niece and nephew dressed as a little old man and a little old lady for Halloween. They're only a year old. It's hilarious and I'd love to make her laugh.
How does your experience as a woman parallel hers?
-Well, we have similar talents but she broke every mold in the book. I haven't had to break many molds because she did it for me. She made it possible.
Where do you go to get inspired?
-I love a road trip. The longest I've ever gone was four months. Also, any large body of water; lakes, oceans, rivers. There's something about water that purifies my creativity. I feel the most at peace there.
What is one thing in your closet you can’t live without?
-My cowboy boots.
How would you define your own style?
-I LOVE clothes so my style changes throughout the day depending on my mood or the occasion. Sometimes I'm a rockstar. Sometimes I'm a bohemian. Sometimes I'm a pinup girl. Other times, I'm a scraggly vagrant. Hahaha! It's all based on how I feel in the moment. I don't think I could really define it. My grandmother would say I'm "funky". :)
